How to Clean And Care For Sapphires
Sapphires come in several colors besides blue, including pink. All sapphires, no matter the color, are easy to care for with regular cleaning. Although this gemstone is among the hardest, care must include being gentle with the stone. In other words, avoid scuffing the gemstone through dragging or knocking it against hard surfaces. As with all jewelry, you should remove sapphire jewelry before cleaning with harsh chemicals or performing vigorous activity (such as sports). The stone itself may or may not react negatively to cleaning chemicals –however, you may damage the metal holding the stone in place (the setting). ?
To clean your gems, pour warm water and ¼ teaspoon of mild dish detergent (a mild hand soap is also fine) in a bowl. Immerse the sapphire jewelry in the bowl.
Soak the jewelry for up to 20 minutes, if necessary and if the setting is gold. Soaking this long will rarely be necessary unless the stone or setting somehow got grease or other difficult to remove substances on it. If the setting is silver (which tarnishes more easily) immerse it in the soapy water and bring it out to clean it quickly with a soft or cloth.
Rinse the sapphire in warm water. Dry it with a soft lint-free cloth (a microfiber cloth, clean t-shirt material or terry cloth).
Store sapphires in a soft-lined jewelry case when you aren’t wearing the jewelry. ?
Extra Tips:
Dust sapphires with a clean cloth weekly–if you do this, you won’t have to clean them as frequently.?
Avoid detergents containing moisturizers, as these may leave a residue on the gem. In addition, avoid any abrasive cleaners or bleach
