Diamond Rings – Choosing Diamond Engagement Rings

Diamond Rings - Choosing Diamond Engagement Rings

When you are choosing diamond engagement rings, choose carefully as this ring is something that your future wife will hopefully wear for the rest of her life. Not all diamond rings are engagement rings. Diamond engagement rings usually have one diamond larger than the rest or consist of a single diamond. These types of diamond engagement rings are called a solitaire.

Years ago, women wore diamond rings that were called cocktail rings.  They were used for fancy dress and not worn all of the time. To the contrary, diamond engagement rings are worn all of the time and many women never remove them. Diamond engagement rings often come with a wedding band as well, as part of a set.

When you are choosing diamond rings, you need to be sure that the ring is set in a hard, precious metal. Gold or platinum is used in diamond rings as it is strong enough to hold the gem. The best type of metal is either 18 or 14 karat gold or platinum. While 24 karat is considered to be pure gold weight, it is too soft to hold fine gems like diamonds.

In addition to looking at the setting, which is the metal ring in which the diamond will be set, you should also be sure of the quality of the diamond.  A one karat diamond is large and considered standard for diamond engagement rings. You can go smaller, if this is what your budget allows.  You can also have more than one gem in the diamond ring itself. Sapphires are often part of diamond engagement rings as are diamonds.

The quality of the diamond is important. You may be able to get a deal at a discount jeweler, but often the diamonds that are offered are flawed. When choosing diamond rings, especially something as special as diamond engagement rings, it pays to go with a jeweler you can trust. Look for one that has been in business for a long period of time and has a solid reputation.

Diamond rings can also be purchased as anniversary rings.  Some women receive five year anniversary rings as diamond rings after they are married five years. This ring consists of five diamonds. Men also wear diamond rings, usually on their pinky finger, although they can also wear them in their wedding band as well.

When it comes to diamond engagement rings, you need to have a rough idea of the size of her finger if you are trying to surprise her with a ring. Many men give their future wives diamond engagement rings that are too big or too small. This problem is easily rectified by taking the diamond rings to a local jeweler who will be able to size them so that they fit properly.  Diamond engagement rings should fit not too tight, but so that they will not slip off. When buying any type of diamond rings, sizing is important. Many jewelers will resize the rings, although any jeweler is usually able to size any type of ring and will usually charge a little bit of money for this service.

Don't listen to other people and their opinions about you needing a certain type of ring. I didn't like any rings I saw at any of the jewelry stores at all because I really love old vintage style rings and most either had a solitaire or 3 stone or other types that are not my style at all, and I went to tons of stores. Then my husband suggested we have one made since he wanted me to have the perfect ring for me and not settle for something "traditional" if I didn't like it. We had my ring made in a vintage antique looking style from white gold. Then we went to a lot of jewelers until we found the perfect diamond for it. My ring doesn't look anything like what most people have but it's perfect for me and even though for most people it isn't their style every time we take it to a jeweler to get it cleaned or even if I go to a jewelry store to look at other jewelry they always want to look at it and they think it's beautiful. Get whatever makes you happy and who cares if it's not what most people would like.

When shopping for antiques, it's best to do so in person so you can inspect quality and capture the beauty in person. Just Google antique engagement rings and look through pictures of styles that you like. Sometimes a single website has a biased towards one style, but if you do a general search you can see lots of options. Print out pictures of the styles you feel she would like most and start browsing antique shops in your area. Show them the pictures and ask them if they have anything similar or know where you could go.

    Good luck! :)

Emeralds, rubies and sapphires are technically the same stone, but in different colors. They are very durable. Also, sapphires come in a variety of colors (I'm wearing a pink sapphire ring today). Garnets also hold up well to daily wear, and come in a long range of color tones from almost golden through orange through deep red. Very nice.

You are correct that opals are fragile. So are pearls and turquoise. Any decent jeweler should be able to advise you on which stones are durable and which are prone to chipping and cracking.

One other thing: consider getting the stone set into an engagement ring setting. Other settings are not made for daily wear, and eventually the band will wear down and break. The prongs are also likely to be stronger in an engagement setting than a regular one. If you're going to use an antique ring, have the shank checked out by a good jeweler: it may need to be replaced. My ring is an antique, but it was designed as a wedding band, and the shank and prongs are plenty sturdy, but we did have them checked before I wore the ring.

@Lolyf55 : sure, having a famous parent can get you a shot at stardom…..but if you just don’t “have it” you will be swept under the rug pretty fast. Gary wasn’t musically great….but….he could sing in tune (a good attribute to have), he had a good band and good song writers……he sang uplifting songs that people liked. He sure as hell was as good or better than Peter Noone and the Hermans Hermits

@inkey2 Hey I didn’t mean anything bad about Gary Lewis, I like his music. I was just stating from that time period. And you are right about how the music had changed when he ETS out of the Army. That style of music was over, to bad too.

I think you are a very lucky lady – the ring you posted a link for is both beautiful and timeless….and a bargain! Many women would dream for a ring like that!

I think the diamond is just right. Any bigger and it looks pretentious, any smaller and it may be too discreet for you.

Ok its not 'out there' but surely "fairly plain" isn't a bad thing? This is a ring you will hopefully be wearing for the rest of your life, even when your 85 years old. It could end up a family heirloom.

If you are set on the ring you had in your head by all means save up and look for another since this is an important purchase – but make sure you don't hurt your fiancé in the process!!

Just wait for the original ring to arrive before deciding for sure though :) Good luck and congratulations on your engagement!

@Gomindyourownloser : Gary Lewis is indeed the son of the famous comic Jerry Lewis. I read in more than one source that his dad, Jerry Lewis was very Jelous at Gary’s fame and success….especially when they referred to him as “the father of Gary Lewis”. If you read any bio’s on Gary….it’s pretty sad what happened to his life. He was drafted into the Viet Nam War, when he finally got out of his military service the music business had totally changed….
